Belville, North Carolina, fell on hard times when the interstate was built on its northern edge and eliminated the transit commerce that was its lifeblood. The western terminus of the crossing of Cape Fear River across from Wilmington, as shown by adjacent photos, little remains of the former downtown except for a Department of Transportation maintenance yard, erected on the site of the former anchorage for over 200 World War II liberty ships, as shown below. Urban Smart Growth encountered the opportunity to assemble the downtown 80 acres adjacent to the river and the historic harbor through a chance encounter. |
